Police have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with racist tweets received by Newcastle defender Danny Simpson.
The teenager, who was arrested on suspicion of malicious communications by Northumbria Police, was bailed pending further inquiries.
Simpson complained of the abuse on Twitter on Monday and it follows previous attacks on the social networking site on team-mates Demba Ba and Sammy Ameobi.
The former Manchester United full-back is interesting Reading and West Brom after he failed to negotiate a new deal at Newcastle at the end of last season.
He is expected to leave the club after Newcastle re-opened talks this week with Lille on Mathieu Debuchy.
Newcastle have already bid £4million for the France international, one of the stars of Euro 2012 who has also attracted interest from Inter Milan. Lille are looking for around £7million for the 26-year-old.
